Orlitia borneensis Sample Collection – Kalimantan Area
The conservation project for Orlitia borneensis using the One-Plan Approach has entered the blood and cloacal swab sampling phase in Kalimantan and Sumatra. The outcome of this collection is a mapped genetic database of Orlitia borneensis from both regions, which will support the development of a high quality assurance colony both physically and genetically.
We collected blood samples from the tail or leg and cloacal swabs following proper ethical standards. In addition, morphometric measurements were taken to assess the physical condition of each individual. This is a crucial step in building a strong genetic foundation for conservation. In the first round of sample collection in Central, South, and East Kalimantan, we obtained samples from 16 individuals. During this journey, Yayasan KONKLUSI was represented by Program Manager, Herdhanu Jayanto.
Sample Collection in Central Kalimantan
The first province visited for sample collection in Kalimantan was Central Kalimantan. The initial sampling site was SKW III Pangkalan Bun (01/07), followed by Hutan Kota Nyaru Menteng in Palangka Raya.
This activity was supported by colleagues, including Drh. Arga from the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) and our partners from SKW III Pangkalan Bun. After successfully obtaining samples from eight individuals, Herdhanu continued the journey to the next province, South Kalimantan.
South Kalimantan Sample Collection
Upon arriving in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, Herdhanu delivered a presentation to BKSDA South Kalimantan, who showed great interest and strong support for this project. The next day (04/07), he conducted the first sampling at the BKSDA Transit Enclosure in Banjarbaru. The journey then continued to the office of Sahabat Bekantan Indonesia (SBI) in Banjarmasin, where the team received full support and facilitation for the conservation effort.
On the following day (05/07), the sampling continued in Hulu Sungai Selatan and Balangan Regencies, covering 3 different locations. In South Kalimantan, Herdhanu was accompanied by Drh. Abi, a veterinarian supporting this project. During this leg of the journey, samples were collected from five individuals.
Sample Collection in East Kalimantan
Herdhanu visited BKSDA East Kalimantan in Paser and met a community conservation in Damit Village, which has long conserved biodiversity along the Kandilo River. Their grassroots effort reminded us that conservation strength often comes from local initiatives. The next day in Samarinda, with support from BKSDA, Yayasan Ulin, forest rangers, and Drh. Nafiah, samples from three Orlitia borneensis were collected. The journey closed with coordination at BKSDA and new partners for conservation.
